Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Heritage Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, with Independence Elementary School, which is a part of LEWISVILLE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Heritage Elementary School has a regular student population of 505 with a 13.6 students/teacher ratio while Independence Elementary School has 814 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.8 students/teacher ratio.
Heritage Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 94 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Independence Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 89 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 82 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Heritage Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in 25% closing performance gaps. Independence Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Heritage Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 66.93% of student population, followed by Hispanics (14.85%), Asians (9.50%), Two or More Races (4.75%), African Americans (3.37%) and Native Americans (0.59%).
The student population at Independence Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 51.97%, followed by Asians (27.52%), Whites or Caucasians (11.30%), African Americans (6.39%), Two or More Races (2.33%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, the Heritage Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.73% compared to 39.80% at Independence Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Heritage Elementary School has 16 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.17% of student population. Independence Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 389 or about 47.79% of student population.
In addition, Heritage Elementary School has 2.57% bilingual students, 3.37% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.42% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Independence Elementary School with 67.32% bilingual students, 5.41% gifted and talented students and 14.37% students in the special education program.
37 teachers employed at Heritage Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.7 years. The 63 teachers at Independence Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Heritage Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while three teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only. Independence Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 16 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Heritage Elementary School there are 36 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Independence Elementary School there are 62 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
