As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Hcc Life Skills Program, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Energy Institute High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Hcc Life Skills Program’s regular student population is 74 with a student-teacher ratio of 4.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Energy Institute High School is 696 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17 students/teacher ratio.
Energy Institute High School earned a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 94 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 96 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, the performance indicators not applicable for Hcc Life Skills Program.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Energy Institute High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Hcc Life Skills Program has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Hcc Life Skills Program. They make up for 55.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.78%), Whites or Caucasians (9.46%) and Asians (1.35%). There is no Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
The student population at Energy Institute High School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.97%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (25.57%), African Americans (23.99%), Asians (3.30%), Two or More Races (2.87%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
Based on household incomes, the Hcc Life Skills Program’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 45.95% compared to 59.77% at Energy Institute High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Hcc Life Skills Program has 4 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.41% of student population. Energy Institute High School has significantly more ELLs at 30 or about 4.31% of student population.
Hcc Life Skills Program has no gifted and talented student, while 100.00% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 2.70% students. Energy Institute High School 6.90% are in the special education program, 47.13% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 3.74% students.
Hcc Life Skills Program's 18 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 12.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 17.6 years. Energy Institute High School's 41 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 6.3 years.
Of its teaching staff, Hcc Life Skills Program has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, four teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Energy Institute High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Hcc Life Skills Program employs 13 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by two teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs two staff members in the school administration department.
On the other hand, Energy Institute High School employs 31 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two teachers are aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and eight more working as school support staff.
