Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Haynes Elementary School, which is a part of KILLEEN ISD, with Maxdale Elementary School, which is a part of KILLEEN ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Haynes Elementary School has a regular student population of 822 with a 17.3 students/teacher ratio while Maxdale Elementary School has 616 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.4 students/teacher ratio.
Haynes Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 76 in closing performance gaps. It scored 86 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Maxdale Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 70 in school progress, 65 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Haynes Elementary School and Maxdale Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Haynes Elementary School. They make up for 38.08% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.93%), Whites or Caucasians (14.60%), Two or More Races (10.83%), Asians (3.89%) and Native Americans (0.85%).
The student population at Maxdale Elementary School is also predominantly by African Americans at 45.13%, followed by Hispanics (25.32%), Whites or Caucasians (14.29%), Two or More Races (7.79%), Asians (2.60%) and Native Americans (1.62%).
Based on household incomes, the Haynes Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 48.18% compared to 85.71% at Maxdale Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Haynes Elementary School has 45 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.47% of student population. Maxdale Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 56 or about 9.09% of student population.
In addition, Haynes Elementary School has 4.99% bilingual students, 1.09% are in the gifted and talented program, while 11.68% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Maxdale Elementary School with 8.12% bilingual students, 1.30% gifted and talented students and 15.42% students in the special education program.
47 teachers employed at Haynes Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.5 years. The 35 teachers at Maxdale Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Haynes Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including seven beginning teachers. Maxdale Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Haynes Elementary School there are 42 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by 19 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At Maxdale Elementary School there are 31 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
