Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Haskett Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Adams Junior High School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Haskett Junior High School’s regular student population is 905 with a 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Adams Junior High School is 1,610 students and a 18.3 students/teacher ratio.
Haskett Junior High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 83 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Adams Junior High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 97 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only four distinction designations or awards for outstanding performance. These are in Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Haskett Junior High School. They make up for 42.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (25.75%), Whites or Caucasians (21.88%), Asians (4.53%) and Two or More Races (4.53%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Adams Junior High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 42.92%, followed by Asians (23.48%), Hispanics (21.86%), African Americans (8.20%), Two or More Races (3.23%) and Native Americans (0.19%).
Based on household incomes, Haskett Junior High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 57.13% compared to 11.37% at Adams Junior High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Haskett Junior High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 16.35% of its student population compared to 7.83% at Adams Junior High School.
In addition, Haskett Junior High School has 15.80% bilingual students, 3.09% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.92% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Adams Junior High School with 7.02% bilingual students, 16.46% gifted and talented students and 9.88% students in the special education program.
Haskett Junior High School's 56 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 3.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 6.2 years. Teachers at Adams Junior High School, numbering 87 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Haskett Junior High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, no teacher serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 24 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Adams Junior High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 25 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 31 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Haskett Junior High School there are 43 female teachers and 12 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, six special education teachers are being assisted by ten teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 11 more working as school support staff.
