As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Emerson High School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, with Independence High School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Emerson High School’s regular student population is 828 with a student-teacher ratio of 10.4 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Independence High School is 1,816 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio.
Emerson High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Independence High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 95 in student achievement, 81 in school progress, 98 in closing performance gaps and 96 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Emerson High School’s only distinction designation is in Read/ELA. Independence High School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Emerson High School. They make up for 31.04% of student population, followed by Asians (30.19%), African Americans (16.79%), Hispanics (15.70%), Two or More Races (5.56%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
The student population at Independence High School is also predominantly by Asians at 43.39%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (32.71%), African Americans (10.74%), Hispanics (9.36%), Two or More Races (2.92%) and Native Americans (0.72%).
Based on household incomes, Emerson High School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 15.94% compared to 9.64% at Independence High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Emerson High School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 3.74% of its student population compared to 1.05% at Independence High School.
In addition, Emerson High School has 3.62% bilingual students, 15.82% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.06% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Independence High School with 0.88% bilingual students, 20.65% gifted and talented students and 6.94% students in the special education program.
Emerson High School's 79 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 1.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 7.5 years. Independence High School's 128 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 10.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Emerson High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 33 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers. Independence High School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 37 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 39 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 32 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Emerson High School employs 46 female teachers and 33 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by seven teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs five staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Independence High School employs 73 female teachers and 54 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs six staff members in the school administration department and 12 more working as school support staff.
