Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Groves Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, with North Belt Elementary School, which is a part of HUMBLE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Groves Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,243 with a 16.2 students/teacher ratio while North Belt Elementary School has 655 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.4 students/teacher ratio.
Groves Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 85 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, North Belt Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Groves Elementary School and North Belt Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Groves Elementary School. They make up for 33.07% of student population, followed by Hispanics (32.42%), African Americans (27.19%), Two or More Races (4.18%), Asians (2.57%) and Native Americans (0.40%).
At North Belt Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.44% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.69%), Whites or Caucasians (4.12%), Asians (1.22%), Two or More Races (0.76%) and Native Americans (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, the Groves Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 21.64% compared to 83.36% at North Belt Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Groves Elementary School has 82 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.60% of student population. North Belt Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 321 or about 49.01% of student population.
Groves Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 5.71%, gifted and talented students, 11.10%, while 8.05% are in the special education program. North Belt Elementary School bilingual students comprise 49.31%, gifted and talented students, 2.29%, and 10.99% are in the special education program.
76 teachers employed at Groves Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.9 years. The 69 teachers at North Belt Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Groves Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 27 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 19 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. North Belt Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 23 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Groves Elementary School there are 69 female teachers and seven male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and nine more working as school support staff.
At North Belt Elementary School there are 63 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
