Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Gross Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Deanda Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Gross Elementary School has a regular student population of 502 with a 20.7 students/teacher ratio while Deanda Elementary School has 553 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Gross Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 60 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Deanda Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Deanda Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Gross Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Gross Elementary School. They make up for 55.58% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.04%), Whites or Caucasians (1.59%), Asians (1.39%) and Two or More Races (1.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Deanda Elementary School, Hispanics make up 93.31% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.62%), Whites or Caucasians (1.81%), Two or More Races (0.72%) and Asians (0.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Gross Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 98.80% compared to 92.22% at Deanda Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Gross Elementary School has 224 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 44.62% of student population. Deanda Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 350 or about 63.29% of student population.
In addition, Gross Elementary School has 44.22% bilingual students, 3.19% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.76% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Deanda Elementary School with 74.32% bilingual students, 5.97% gifted and talented students and 8.50% students in the special education program.
