Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Garcia Middle School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, with Mead Middle School, which is a part of ALDINE ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Garcia Middle School’s regular student population is 1,151 with a 15.9 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Mead Middle School is 1,091 students and a 14.9 students/teacher ratio.
Garcia Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 62 in student achievement, 81 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 79 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mead Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 56 in student achievement, 60 in school progress, 65 in closing performance gaps and 62 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Garcia Middle School and Mead Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Garcia Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 74.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.64%), Asians (2.87%), Whites or Caucasians (1.74%), Two or More Races (0.96%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
At Mead Middle School, Hispanics make up 95.05% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.39%), Whites or Caucasians (1.10%), Native Americans (0.37%) and Two or More Races (0.09%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Garcia Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 90.53% compared to 91.38% at Mead Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Garcia Middle School has 458 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 39.79% of student population. Mead Middle School has slightly more ELLs at 476 or about 43.63% of student population.
In addition, Garcia Middle School has 39.27% bilingual students, 5.21% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.69% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Mead Middle School with 42.90% bilingual students, 9.35% gifted and talented students and 10.63% students in the special education program.
Garcia Middle School's 72 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years. Teachers at Mead Middle School, numbering 73 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Garcia Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 18 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Mead Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 34 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 11 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Garcia Middle School there are 54 female teachers and 17 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, eight special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and 13 more working as school support staff.
