Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Finch Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, with Naomi Press Elementary School, which is a part of MCKINNEY ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Finch Elementary School has a regular student population of 333 with a 10 students/teacher ratio while Naomi Press Elementary School has 770 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.4 students/teacher ratio.
Finch Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Naomi Press Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 67 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Finch Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Naomi Press Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Finch Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 75.98% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.21%), Whites or Caucasians (9.01%), Two or More Races (2.40%), Asians (1.80%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
The student population at Naomi Press Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 38.96%, followed by African Americans (24.81%), Hispanics (22.47%), Two or More Races (8.05%), Asians (5.32%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, Finch Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 73.27% compared to 27.79% at Naomi Press Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Finch Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 61.26% of its student population compared to 6.62% at Naomi Press Elementary School.
In addition, Finch Elementary School has 60.66% bilingual students, 4.50% are in the gifted and talented program, while 21.32% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Naomi Press Elementary School with 6.10% bilingual students, 6.62% gifted and talented students and 14.16% students in the special education program.
33 teachers employed at Finch Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.7 years. The 50 teachers at Naomi Press Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Finch Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Naomi Press Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 25 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while one teacher only has been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Finch Elementary School there are 28 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
At Naomi Press Elementary School there are 48 female teachers and one male teacher only.
