Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. It is in this area where the two schools differ. Escamilla Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Thompson Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Escamilla Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.42% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (2.97%), African Americans (1.98%), Native Americans (0.25%), Two or More Races (0.25%) and Asians (0.12%).

Based on household incomes, Escamilla Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 95.79% compared to 91.70% at Thompson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Escamilla Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 57.62% of its student population compared to 74.27% at Thompson Elementary School.
In addition, Escamilla Elementary School has 60.97% bilingual students, 2.23% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.54% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Thompson Elementary School with 73.86% bilingual students, 4.98% gifted and talented students and 8.71% students in the special education program.
