Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Erma Nash Elementary School, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, with Willie Brown Academy, which is a part of MANSFIELD ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Erma Nash Elementary School has a regular student population of 620 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Willie Brown Academy has 566 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Erma Nash Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 73 in student achievement, 72 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Willie Brown Academy earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 83 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Erma Nash Elementary School and Willie Brown Academy are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Erma Nash Elementary School. They make up for 55.32% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (18.71%), African Americans (18.23%), Two or More Races (5.16%), Asians (1.77%) and Native Americans (0.65%).
The student population at Willie Brown Academy is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 47.00%, followed by African Americans (18.73%), Hispanics (18.20%), Asians (9.19%) and Two or More Races (6.54%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Erma Nash Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 58.87% compared to 24.38% at Willie Brown Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Erma Nash Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 38.06% of its student population compared to 11.48% at Willie Brown Academy.
Erma Nash Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 55.65%, gifted and talented students, 3.39%, while 11.13% are in the special education program. Willie Brown Academy bilingual students comprise 11.31%, gifted and talented students, 3.18%, and 11.48% are in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Erma Nash Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.6 years. The 38 teachers at Willie Brown Academy have been serving the school for an average of 11.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Erma Nash Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Willie Brown Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 14 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Erma Nash Elementary School there are 39 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by six teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
