Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Durham Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Piney Point Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Durham Elementary School has a regular student population of 552 with a 17.2 students/teacher ratio while Piney Point Elementary School has 1,177 students and a student-teacher ratio of 18.1 students/teacher ratio.
Durham Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Piney Point Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 64 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 76 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Durham Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and with 25% student progress. Piney Point Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Durham Elementary School. They make up for 64.67% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.37%), African Americans (9.78%), Two or More Races (1.45%) and Asians (0.72%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Piney Point Elementary School, Hispanics make up 79.52% of student population, followed by African Americans (13.00%), Whites or Caucasians (3.99%), Asians (2.63%), Two or More Races (0.68%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, the Durham Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 59.06% compared to 97.28% at Piney Point Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Durham Elementary School has 188 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 34.06% of student population. Piney Point Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 770 or about 65.42% of student population.
Durham Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 71.01%, gifted and talented students, 11.23%, while 7.61% are in the special education program. Piney Point Elementary School bilingual students comprise 63.13%, gifted and talented students, 5.44%, and 6.71% are in the special education program.

The 65 teachers at Piney Point Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 12.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.6 years.
