Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Dulles Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Lake Olympia Middle School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Dulles Middle School’s regular student population is 1,360 with a 17.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Lake Olympia Middle School is 1,200 students and a 14.5 students/teacher ratio.
Dulles Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 84 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 83 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lake Olympia Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 65 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 74 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Dulles Middle School's two out of seven distinctions are in Science and Social Studies. Lake Olympia Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Dulles Middle School. They make up for 28.60% of student population, followed by Asians (27.50%), Hispanics (22.65%), Whites or Caucasians (16.47%), Two or More Races (4.19%) and Native Americans (0.22%).
At Lake Olympia Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 55.42% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.25%), Asians (4.83%), Two or More Races (3.17%), Whites or Caucasians (2.58%) and Native Americans (0.58%).
Based on household incomes, the Dulles Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 53.24% compared to 69.50% at Lake Olympia Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dulles Middle School has 200 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.71% of student population. Lake Olympia Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 228 or about 19.00% of student population.
Dulles Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 14.12%, gifted and talented students, 2.65%, while 11.99% are in the special education program. Lake Olympia Middle School bilingual students comprise 18.25%, gifted and talented students, 0.42%, and 14.67% are in the special education program.
Dulles Middle School's 77 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years. Teachers at Lake Olympia Middle School, numbering 82 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 5.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dulles Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 12 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 27 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Lake Olympia Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has nine teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 16 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 26 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 27 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Dulles Middle School there are 59 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 13 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
At Lake Olympia Middle School there are 53 female teachers and 29 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 21 special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
