Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Dueitt Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, with Bammel Middle School, which is a part of SPRING ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Dueitt Middle School’s regular student population is 857 with a 15.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Bammel Middle School is 846 students and a 16.1 students/teacher ratio.
Dueitt Middle School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 63 in school progress and 70 in closing performance gaps. It scored 65 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bammel Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 72 in school progress, 71 in closing performance gaps and 72 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Dueitt Middle School and Bammel Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Dueitt Middle School. They make up for 49.71% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.81%), Whites or Caucasians (7.93%), Two or More Races (2.33%), Native Americans (1.17%) and Asians (0.70%).
At Bammel Middle School, African Americans are the biggest group, comprising 61.94% of student population, followed by Hispanics (33.10%), Two or More Races (1.77%), Whites or Caucasians (1.42%), Native Americans (1.06%) and Asians (0.71%).
Based on household incomes, the Dueitt Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 87.28% compared to 95.51% at Bammel Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dueitt Middle School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 25.44% of its student population compared to 23.76% at Bammel Middle School.
Dueitt Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 22.99%, gifted and talented students, 6.77%, while 13.65% are in the special education program. Bammel Middle School bilingual students comprise 23.64%, gifted and talented students, 2.36%, and 14.18% are in the special education program.
Dueitt Middle School's 54 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 4.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.9 years. Teachers at Bammel Middle School, numbering 52 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 3.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dueitt Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including ten beginning teachers. Bammel Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including 12 beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Dueitt Middle School there are 31 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, seven special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and ten more working as school support staff.
At Bammel Middle School there are 33 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 14 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
