Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Diane Winborn Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, with Griffin Elementary School, which is a part of KATY ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Diane Winborn Elementary School has a regular student population of 678 with a 11.9 students/teacher ratio while Griffin Elementary School has 736 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.5 students/teacher ratio.
Diane Winborn Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Diane Winborn Elementary School’s two out of seven distinctions are in Science and 25% closing performance gaps. Griffin Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Diane Winborn Elementary School. They make up for 41.74% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (28.61%), African Americans (18.44%), Two or More Races (6.19%) and Asians (4.87%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Griffin Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 44.70%, followed by Asians (24.73%), Hispanics (18.75%), Two or More Races (6.11%) and African Americans (5.57%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Diane Winborn Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 61.80% compared to 14.95% at Griffin Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Diane Winborn Elementary School has 95 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 14.01% of student population. Griffin Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 170 or about 23.10% of student population.
In addition, Diane Winborn Elementary School has 13.57% bilingual students, 2.51% are in the gifted and talented program, while 21.68% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Griffin Elementary School with 22.01% bilingual students, 10.05% gifted and talented students and 17.80% students in the special education program.
