Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Dartmouth Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Math/Science/Tech Magnet, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Dartmouth Elementary School has a regular student population of 344 with a 12.1 students/teacher ratio while Math/Science/Tech Magnet has 579 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Dartmouth Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 83 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 82 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Math/Science/Tech Magnet performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 94 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Math/Science/Tech Magnet's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and post-secondary. Dartmouth Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Dartmouth Elementary School. They make up for 44.19% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.19%), Hispanics (18.90%), Asians (13.95%), Two or More Races (2.91%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
The student population at Math/Science/Tech Magnet is also predominantly by African Americans at 35.06%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.66%), Hispanics (22.28%), Asians (15.03%), Two or More Races (3.45%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, the Dartmouth Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is lower at 50.00% compared to 51.64% at Math/Science/Tech Magnet.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Dartmouth Elementary School has 75 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 21.80% of student population. Math/Science/Tech Magnet has significantly more ELLs at 183 or about 31.61% of student population.
In addition, Dartmouth Elementary School has 21.51% bilingual students, 4.65% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.90% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Math/Science/Tech Magnet with 31.26% bilingual students, 16.58% gifted and talented students and 12.61% students in the special education program.
28 teachers employed at Dartmouth Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. The 47 teachers at Math/Science/Tech Magnet have been serving the school for an average of 8.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Dartmouth Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, two teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Math/Science/Tech Magnet has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has 11 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, four teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Dartmouth Elementary School there are 25 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Math/Science/Tech Magnet there are 46 female teachers and zero male teacher.
