Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Creekview Middle School, which is a part of EAGLE MT-SAGINAW ISD, with Highland Middle School, which is a part of EAGLE MT-SAGINAW ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Creekview Middle School’s regular student population is 833 with a 15.7 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Highland Middle School is 756 students and a 13 students/teacher ratio.
Creekview Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 90 in closing performance gaps. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Highland Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 79 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 83 in closing performance gaps and 87 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Creekview Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Highland Middle School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Creekview Middle School. They make up for 37.58% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (36.61%), African Americans (12.61%), Asians (7.32%), Two or More Races (5.28%) and Native Americans (0.12%).
The student population at Highland Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 42.46%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.61%), African Americans (14.29%), Asians (6.88%), Two or More Races (4.50%) and Native Americans (0.13%).
Based on household incomes, the Creekview Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 37.82% compared to 49.21% at Highland Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Creekview Middle School has 110 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.21% of student population. Highland Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 136 or about 17.99% of student population.
Creekview Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 13.21%, gifted and talented students, 9.24%, while 12.36% are in the special education program. Highland Middle School bilingual students comprise 17.20%, gifted and talented students, 8.86%, and 16.27% are in the special education program.
Creekview Middle School's 53 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15 years. Teachers at Highland Middle School, numbering 58 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Creekview Middle School has five teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. At Highland Middle School there are 43 female teachers and 14 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
