Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cowan Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Pecan Springs Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted that the two schools are on opposite ends of the ratings spectrum.
Cowan Elementary School has a regular student population of 534 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Pecan Springs Elementary School has 248 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.6 students/teacher ratio.
Cowan Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 94 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Pecan Springs Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 51 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 59 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cowan Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Pecan Springs Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Cowan Elementary School. They make up for 45.51% of student population, followed by Hispanics (41.39%), Two or More Races (5.24%), Asians (3.93%), African Americans (3.56%) and Native Americans (0.19%).
At Pecan Springs Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.47%), Whites or Caucasians (6.05%), Two or More Races (2.42%) and Native Americans (0.40%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Cowan Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 32.58% compared to 96.77% at Pecan Springs Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cowan Elementary School has 44 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.24% of student population. Pecan Springs Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 94 or about 37.90% of student population.
In addition, Cowan Elementary School has 8.05% bilingual students, 4.87% are in the gifted and talented program, while 13.48% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Pecan Springs Elementary School with 48.79% bilingual students, 6.45% gifted and talented students and 12.90% students in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Cowan Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 13.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years. The 23 teachers at Pecan Springs Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.1 years.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cowan Elementary School there are 36 female teachers and three male teachers.
