Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Cook Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Pecan Springs Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Cook Elementary School has a regular student population of 429 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while Pecan Springs Elementary School has 248 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.6 students/teacher ratio.
Cook Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Pecan Springs Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 51 in student achievement, 69 in school progress, 59 in closing performance gaps and 59 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Cook Elementary School and Pecan Springs Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Cook Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.50%), Whites or Caucasians (3.50%), Two or More Races (1.17%), Asians (0.70%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
At Pecan Springs Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 57.66% of student population, followed by African Americans (33.47%), Whites or Caucasians (6.05%), Two or More Races (2.42%) and Native Americans (0.40%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Cook Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 92.31% compared to 96.77% at Pecan Springs Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cook Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 75.99% of its student population compared to 37.90% at Pecan Springs Elementary School.
In addition, Cook Elementary School has 78.09% bilingual students, 3.26% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.39% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Pecan Springs Elementary School with 48.79% bilingual students, 6.45% gifted and talented students and 12.90% students in the special education program.
