Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cook Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Blackshear Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cook Elementary School has a regular student population of 429 with a 12.2 students/teacher ratio while Blackshear Elementary School has 287 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.3 students/teacher ratio.
Cook Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Blackshear Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 74 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Blackshear Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Cook Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Cook Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.68% of student population, followed by African Americans (3.50%), Whites or Caucasians (3.50%), Two or More Races (1.17%), Asians (0.70%) and Native Americans (0.47%).
The student population at Blackshear Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.55%, followed by African Americans (26.13%), Whites or Caucasians (21.60%), Two or More Races (7.32%) and Asians (1.39%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Cook Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 92.31% compared to 56.45% at Blackshear Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cook Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 75.99% of its student population compared to 11.15% at Blackshear Elementary School.
In addition, Cook Elementary School has 78.09% bilingual students, 3.26% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.39% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Blackshear Elementary School with 10.80% bilingual students, 13.94% gifted and talented students and 13.59% students in the special education program.
35 teachers employed at Cook Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.3 years. The 23 teachers at Blackshear Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 5.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cook Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 11 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Blackshear Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, five teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cook Elementary School there are 29 female teachers and six male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and one more working as school support staff.
At Blackshear Elementary School there are 22 female teachers and one male teacher only. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by three teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
