Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Club Estates, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, with Dawson Elementary School, which is a part of CORPUS CHRISTI ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Club Estates has a regular student population of 360 with a 14 students/teacher ratio while Dawson Elementary School has 473 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Club Estates performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Club Estates's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Dawson Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Club Estates is Hispanics who make up nearly 79.44% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.83%), African Americans (2.22%), Two or More Races (1.39%) and Asians (1.11%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Dawson Elementary School, Hispanics make up 78.65% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (13.53%), African Americans (4.86%), Two or More Races (1.90%) and Asians (0.63%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Club Estates’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 73.89% compared to 64.48% at Dawson Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Club Estates has 8 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.22% of student population. Dawson Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 24 or about 5.07% of student population.
Club Estates has no gifted and talented student, while 9.44% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 1.94% students. Dawson Elementary School has no gifted and talented student, while 11.21% are in the special education program, and bilingual students comprise 4.23% students.
25 teachers employed at Club Estates have been teaching in the school for an average of about 12.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 15.1 years.
