Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Christie Elementary School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, with Curtsinger Elementary School, which is a part of FRISCO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Christie Elementary School has a regular student population of 390 with a 9.7 students/teacher ratio while Curtsinger Elementary School has 582 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.6 students/teacher ratio.
Christie Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. On the other hand, Curtsinger Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 96 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Christie Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Curtsinger Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Christie Elementary School. They make up for 52.82% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (20.26%), African Americans (12.56%), Asians (9.23%), Two or More Races (4.87%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
The student population at Curtsinger Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 42.10%, followed by Asians (32.47%), Hispanics (14.09%), African Americans (6.01%), Two or More Races (4.98%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, Christie Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 42.31% compared to 12.71% at Curtsinger Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Christie Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 47.69% of its student population compared to 15.81% at Curtsinger Elementary School.
Christie Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 48.72%, gifted and talented students, 5.64%, while 15.90% are in the special education program. Curtsinger Elementary School bilingual students comprise 14.78%, gifted and talented students, 5.15%, and 14.78% are in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Christie Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.2 years. The 37 teachers at Curtsinger Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.4 years.
Of its teaching staff, Christie Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, ten teachers have worked for 11-20 years, ten teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 11 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Curtsinger Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Christie Elementary School there are 37 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 12 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
