Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cesar Chavez Learning Center, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, with Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, which is a part of DALLAS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cesar Chavez Learning Center has a regular student population of 579 with a 14.2 students/teacher ratio while Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School has 575 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.5 students/teacher ratio.
Cesar Chavez Learning Center earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 69 in student achievement, 80 in school progress and 78 in closing performance gaps. It scored 77 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 77 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Cesar Chavez Learning Center’s only distinction designation is in Science. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Cesar Chavez Learning Center. They make up for 51.81% of student population, followed by Hispanics (42.14%), Whites or Caucasians (2.07%), Asians (2.07%), Two or More Races (1.38%) and Native Americans (0.52%).
At Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School, Hispanics make up 92.35% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.00%), Whites or Caucasians (1.74%), Asians (1.04%), Native Americans (0.70%) and Two or More Races (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, Cesar Chavez Learning Center’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly higher at 94.99% compared to 89.57% at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cesar Chavez Learning Center has 192 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 33.16% of student population. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 317 or about 55.13% of student population.
In addition, Cesar Chavez Learning Center has 30.57% bilingual students, 10.54% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.61% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School with 54.78% bilingual students, 12.00% gifted and talented students and 11.13% students in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Cesar Chavez Learning Center have been teaching in the school for an average of about 11.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.2 years. The 37 teachers at Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 12.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13 years.
Of its teaching staff, Cesar Chavez Learning Center has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while five teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School has four teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Cesar Chavez Learning Center there are 30 female teachers and ten male teachers. Of its teaching staff, one special education teacher is being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has five staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary School there are 32 female teachers and five male teachers. Of its teaching staff, two special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
