Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Carpenter Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, with Robinson Middle School, which is a part of PLANO ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Carpenter Middle School’s regular student population is 623 with a 13.6 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Robinson Middle School is 998 students and a 17 students/teacher ratio.
Carpenter Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 73 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. It scored 74 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Robinson Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 93 in closing performance gaps and 93 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Robinson Middle School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies and post-secondary. Carpenter Middle School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Carpenter Middle School. They make up for 45.59% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (23.43%), African Americans (20.06%), Asians (6.10%), Two or More Races (4.49%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
The student population at Robinson Middle School is also predominantly by Asians at 36.37%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (30.16%), Hispanics (15.93%), African Americans (11.92%), Two or More Races (4.91%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, Carpenter Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 55.38% compared to 21.44% at Robinson Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Carpenter Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 18.62% of its student population compared to 8.12% at Robinson Middle School.
In addition, Carpenter Middle School has 18.46% bilingual students, 14.29% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.46% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Robinson Middle School with 7.92% bilingual students, 26.55% gifted and talented students and 9.12% students in the special education program.
Carpenter Middle School's 45 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years. Teachers at Robinson Middle School, numbering 58 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Carpenter Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Robinson Middle School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 20 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Carpenter Middle School there are 32 female teachers and 13 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 11 special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Robinson Middle School there are 40 female teachers and 18 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, ten special education teachers are being assisted by five teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
