Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Cannaday Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, with Floyd Elementary School, which is a part of MESQUITE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Cannaday Elementary School has a regular student population of 579 with a 14.1 students/teacher ratio while Floyd Elementary School has 462 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.6 students/teacher ratio.
Cannaday Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 87 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Floyd Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 65 in student achievement, 77 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 77 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cannaday Elementary School's two out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA) and Science. Floyd Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Cannaday Elementary School. They make up for 46.11% of student population, followed by African Americans (37.48%), Whites or Caucasians (10.02%), Asians (2.94%), Two or More Races (2.76%) and Native Americans (0.52%).
At Floyd Elementary School, Hispanics make up 73.16% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.70%), Whites or Caucasians (4.33%), Native Americans (1.30%) and Two or More Races (1.30%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Cannaday Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 85.49% compared to 96.54% at Floyd Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Cannaday Elementary School has 205 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 35.41% of student population. Floyd Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 265 or about 57.36% of student population.
Cannaday Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 35.41%, gifted and talented students, 3.80%, while 14.85% are in the special education program. Floyd Elementary School bilingual students comprise 56.28%, gifted and talented students, 2.81%, and 11.26% are in the special education program.

The 31 teachers at Floyd Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.3 years.
