Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Campbell Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Davis Elementary School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Campbell Elementary School has a regular student population of 169 with a 12.5 students/teacher ratio while Davis Elementary School has 556 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.7 students/teacher ratio.
Campbell Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 56 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Davis Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 91 in student achievement, 93 in school progress, 89 in closing performance gaps and 92 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Davis Elementary School's one out of seven distinction is in with 25% student progress. Campbell Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Campbell Elementary School. They make up for 40.83% of student population, followed by Hispanics (24.85%), Whites or Caucasians (19.53%), Two or More Races (8.28%) and Asians (6.51%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Davis Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 54.14% of student population, followed by Hispanics (25.72%), Asians (9.35%), African Americans (5.58%), Two or More Races (4.68%) and Native Americans (0.36%).
Based on household incomes, Campbell Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 75.74% compared to 27.16% at Davis Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Campbell Elementary School has 31 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 18.34% of student population. Davis Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 90 or about 16.19% of student population.
Campbell Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 18.34%, gifted and talented students, 10.65%, while 12.43% are in the special education program. Davis Elementary School bilingual students comprise 16.37%, gifted and talented students, 6.83%, and 10.61% are in the special education program.
