Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Caldwell Arts Academy, which is a part of TYLER ISD, with T J Austin Elementary School, which is a part of TYLER ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Caldwell Arts Academy has a regular student population of 577 with a 14.4 students/teacher ratio while T J Austin Elementary School has 332 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12.2 students/teacher ratio.
Caldwell Arts Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 89 in closing performance gaps. It scored 90 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, T J Austin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 58 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 72 in closing performance gaps and 79 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Caldwell Arts Academy's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. T J Austin Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Caldwell Arts Academy. They make up for 41.94% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.72%), African Americans (22.70%), Two or More Races (3.12%) and Native Americans (0.52%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At T J Austin Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 64.76% of student population, followed by African Americans (32.83%), Two or More Races (1.51%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.90%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Caldwell Arts Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 56.67% compared to 97.29% at T J Austin Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Caldwell Arts Academy has 49 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.49% of student population. T J Austin Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 148 or about 44.58% of student population.
Caldwell Arts Academy’s bilingual students comprise 3.99%, gifted and talented students, 18.89%, while 4.85% are in the special education program. T J Austin Elementary School bilingual students comprise 43.98%, gifted and talented students, 3.01%, and 10.84% are in the special education program.
40 teachers employed at Caldwell Arts Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 10 years with individual teaching experience averaging 13.6 years. The 27 teachers at T J Austin Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 3.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.9 years.
Of its teaching staff, Caldwell Arts Academy no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 18 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, nine teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. T J Austin Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, six teachers have worked for 11-20 years, two teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Caldwell Arts Academy there are 36 female teachers and four male teachers. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and three more working as school support staff.
At T J Austin Elementary School there are 23 female teachers and four male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
