Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Burbank Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with West Briar Middle School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Burbank Middle School’s regular student population is 1,423 with a 18 students/teacher ratio. The student population at West Briar Middle School is 1,117 students and a 18.2 students/teacher ratio.
Burbank Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 87 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 96 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, West Briar Middle School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 83 in student achievement, 89 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Burbank Middle School bagged all seven distinction awards in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. West Briar Middle School’s five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Burbank Middle School is Hispanics who make up nearly 94.45% of student population, followed by African Americans (4.29%), Whites or Caucasians (0.98%), Native Americans (0.21%) and Asians (0.07%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
The student population at West Briar Middle School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 36.71%, followed by African Americans (33.57%), Whites or Caucasians (18.89%), Asians (8.77%), Two or More Races (1.79%) and Native Americans (0.27%).
Based on household incomes, Burbank Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 93.39% compared to 63.56% at West Briar Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Burbank Middle School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 45.19% of its student population compared to 17.64% at West Briar Middle School.
Burbank Middle School’s bilingual students comprise 46.31%, gifted and talented students, 29.66%, while 8.71% are in the special education program. West Briar Middle School bilingual students comprise 17.01%, gifted and talented students, 25.43%, and 6.62% are in the special education program.
Burbank Middle School's 79 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11 years. Teachers at West Briar Middle School, numbering 61 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 7.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Burbank Middle School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 16 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
