Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Buckalew Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, with Hailey Elementary School, which is a part of CONROE ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Buckalew Elementary School has a regular student population of 666 with a 17.1 students/teacher ratio while Hailey Elementary School has 593 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.1 students/teacher ratio.
Buckalew Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Buckalew Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Hailey Elementary School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Buckalew Elementary School. They make up for 59.46% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.92%), Asians (9.91%), Two or More Races (5.26%), African Americans (3.15%) and Native Americans (0.30%).
The student population at Hailey Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 36.59%, followed by Hispanics (30.02%), African Americans (19.39%), Asians (7.25%), Two or More Races (6.07%) and Native Americans (0.34%).
Based on household incomes, the Buckalew Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 10.81% compared to 56.49% at Hailey Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Buckalew Elementary School has 60 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 9.01% of student population. Hailey Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 83 or about 14.00% of student population.
Buckalew Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 8.41%, gifted and talented students, 10.51%, while 7.21% are in the special education program. Hailey Elementary School bilingual students comprise 12.82%, gifted and talented students, 4.22%, and 12.98% are in the special education program.
