Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Bruce Shulkey Elementary School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with McRae Elementary School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Bruce Shulkey Elementary School has a regular student population of 415 with a 12.3 students/teacher ratio while McRae Elementary School has 583 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.7 students/teacher ratio.
Bruce Shulkey Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365 (Not Rated per SB 1365) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 53 in student achievement, 69 in school progress and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 68 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, McRae Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 52 in student achievement, 82 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 80 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Bruce Shulkey Elementary School and McRae Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Bruce Shulkey Elementary School. They make up for 37.59% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.71%), Whites or Caucasians (21.20%), Two or More Races (6.51%), Asians (6.02%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
At McRae Elementary School, Hispanics make up 92.28% of student population, followed by African Americans (6.17%), Whites or Caucasians (0.86%), Two or More Races (0.51%) and Native Americans (0.17%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Bruce Shulkey Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 84.10% compared to 94.85% at McRae Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bruce Shulkey Elementary School has 78 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 18.80% of student population. McRae Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 384 or about 65.87% of student population.
In addition, Bruce Shulkey Elementary School has 17.35% bilingual students, 2.89% are in the gifted and talented program, while 16.87% are in the special education program. This stacks up against McRae Elementary School with 60.38% bilingual students, 4.12% gifted and talented students and 13.38% students in the special education program.
