Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Brentfield Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Aikin Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Brentfield Elementary School has a regular student population of 806 with a 14.7 students/teacher ratio while Aikin Elementary School has 500 students and a student-teacher ratio of 12 students/teacher ratio.
Brentfield Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 96 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and an impressive100 in closing performance gaps. It scored 97 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Brentfield Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Aikin Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Brentfield Elementary School is Whites or Caucasians who make up nearly 77.42% of student population, followed by Hispanics (12.16%), Two or More Races (3.97%), Asians (3.47%), African Americans (2.61%) and Native Americans (0.37%).
The student population at Aikin Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 43.40%, followed by African Americans (31.20%), Asians (17.40%), Whites or Caucasians (5.40%), Two or More Races (1.80%) and Native Americans (0.60%).
Based on household incomes, the Brentfield Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 11.91% compared to 89.80% at Aikin Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Brentfield Elementary School has 31 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 3.85% of student population. Aikin Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 328 or about 65.60% of student population.
Brentfield Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 3.23%, gifted and talented students, 12.28%, while 12.28% are in the special education program. Aikin Elementary School bilingual students comprise 65.60%, gifted and talented students, 2.40%, and 12.20% are in the special education program.
