Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Braeburn Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Sinclair Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Braeburn Elementary School has a regular student population of 767 with a 17.7 students/teacher ratio while Sinclair Elementary School has 627 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.7 students/teacher ratio.
Braeburn Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Braeburn Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Sinclair Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Braeburn Elementary School is Hispanics who make up nearly 90.74% of student population, followed by African Americans (6.00%), Whites or Caucasians (1.69%), Asians (0.91%) and Two or More Races (0.65%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
The student population at Sinclair Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 40.67%, followed by Hispanics (38.60%), African Americans (11.32%), Asians (4.31%), Two or More Races (4.15%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
Based on household incomes, Braeburn Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 98.57% compared to 35.89% at Sinclair Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Braeburn Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 84.88% of its student population compared to 4.78% at Sinclair Elementary School.
In addition, Braeburn Elementary School has 84.49% bilingual students, 2.35% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.78% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Sinclair Elementary School with 6.54% bilingual students, 25.36% gifted and talented students and 9.89% students in the special education program.
