Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Boulevard Heights, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Benbrook Middle/High School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Boulevard Heights has a regular student population of 44 with a 3.2 students/teacher ratio while Benbrook Middle/High School has 1,530 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Boulevard Heights performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on two domains: student achievement and school progress. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 88 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and closing performance gaps not applicable. It scored 91 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Benbrook Middle/High School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 86 in student achievement, 88 in school progress, 77 in closing performance gaps and 85 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only two distinction designations or awards for performance. For Boulevard Heights these are in post-secondary and with 25% student progress while Benbrook Middle/High School secured in Mathematics and Social Studies.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Boulevard Heights. They make up for 40.91% of student population, followed by African Americans (31.82%) and Whites or Caucasians (27.27%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
The student population at Benbrook Middle/High School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 49.67%, followed by Hispanics (38.24%), African Americans (7.12%), Two or More Races (3.20%), Asians (1.31%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
Based on household incomes, Boulevard Heights’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 86.36% compared to 51.70% at Benbrook Middle/High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Boulevard Heights has no English Language Learners or ELLS. Benbrook Middle/High School has significantly more ELLs at 169 or about 11.05% of student population.
Boulevard Heights has no gifted and talented and bilingual students, while 100.00% are in the special education program. Benbrook Middle/High School 10.26% are in the special education program, 17.39% are in the gifted and talented program, and bilingual students comprise 10.85% students.
13 teachers employed at Boulevard Heights have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. The 96 teachers at Benbrook Middle/High School have been serving the school for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Boulevard Heights has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, three teachers have worked for 11-20 years, three teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher. Benbrook Middle/High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
Boulevard Heights has 13 special education teachers assisted by 16 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Benbrook Middle/High School has nine special education teachers and 6 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
