Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Blue Ridge Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, with Oyster Creek Elementary School, which is a part of FORT BEND ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Blue Ridge Elementary School has a regular student population of 246 with a 9.2 students/teacher ratio while Oyster Creek Elementary School has 769 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.8 students/teacher ratio.
Blue Ridge Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 64 in student achievement, 93 in school progress and 75 in closing performance gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Blue Ridge Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth. Oyster Creek Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Blue Ridge Elementary School. They make up for 65.45% of student population, followed by Hispanics (30.49%), Whites or Caucasians (2.03%) and Two or More Races (2.03%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
The student population at Oyster Creek Elementary School is also predominantly by Asians at 33.68%, followed by Hispanics (23.54%), African Americans (21.98%), Whites or Caucasians (16.64%), Two or More Races (3.64%) and Native Americans (0.26%).
Based on household incomes, Blue Ridge Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 89.84% compared to 56.96% at Oyster Creek Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Blue Ridge Elementary School has 21 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 8.54% of student population. Oyster Creek Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 250 or about 32.51% of student population.
In addition, Blue Ridge Elementary School has 7.72% bilingual students, 0.81% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.29% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Oyster Creek Elementary School with 31.60% bilingual students, 1.43% gifted and talented students and 11.44% students in the special education program.
