Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. Blackshear Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Blackshear Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Isaacs Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Academic Growth.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Blackshear Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 87.20% of student population, followed by Hispanics (10.38%), Whites or Caucasians (1.73%) and Two or More Races (0.69%). There is no Asians and Native Americansstudents in the school.
At Isaacs Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 56.73% of student population, followed by African Americans (40.73%) and Whites or Caucasians (2.55%). There is no Asians, Native Americans and Two or More Racesstudents in the school.
Based on household incomes, Blackshear Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 99.65% compared to 97.09% at Isaacs Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Blackshear Elementary School has 15 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 5.19% of student population. Isaacs Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 107 or about 38.91% of student population.
In addition, Blackshear Elementary School has 5.19% bilingual students, 1.04% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.30% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Isaacs Elementary School with 37.82% bilingual students, 1.82% gifted and talented students and 11.27% students in the special education program.
