Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Birkes Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, with Adam Elementary School, which is a part of CYPRESS-FAIRBANKS ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Birkes Elementary School has a regular student population of 1,022 with a 13.6 students/teacher ratio while Adam Elementary School has 804 students and a student-teacher ratio of 10.7 students/teacher ratio.
Birkes Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 91 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Adam Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 82 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 82 in closing performance gaps and 89 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Both schools garnered only three distinction designations or awards for performance. For Birkes Elementary School these are in Science, post-secondary and with 25% student progress while Adam Elementary School secured in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Science and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Birkes Elementary School. They make up for 34.93% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (27.89%), African Americans (15.66%), Asians (13.60%), Two or More Races (7.34%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
The student population at Adam Elementary School is also predominantly by Hispanics at 46.52%, followed by Whites or Caucasians (26.24%), African Americans (12.31%), Asians (9.08%), Two or More Races (5.10%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
Based on household incomes, the Birkes Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 45.89% compared to 71.52% at Adam Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Birkes Elementary School has 139 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 13.60% of student population. Adam Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 193 or about 24.00% of student population.
Birkes Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 13.31%, gifted and talented students, 8.51%, while 12.82% are in the special education program. Adam Elementary School bilingual students comprise 23.51%, gifted and talented students, 2.61%, and 14.18% are in the special education program.

The 75 teachers at Adam Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Birkes Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 17 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 21 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 18 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Adam Elementary School has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 19 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 21 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Birkes Elementary School there are 73 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 25 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
