Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Beverly Hills Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, with Park View Intermediate, which is a part of PASADENA ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Beverly Hills Intermediate’s regular student population is 887 with a 11.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Park View Intermediate is 609 students and a 11.1 students/teacher ratio.
Beverly Hills Intermediate performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 94 in closing performance gaps. It scored 93 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Park View Intermediate earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 73 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 75 in closing performance gaps and 82 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Beverly Hills Intermediate's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Park View Intermediate’s two out of seven distinctions are in Social Studies and post-secondary.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Beverly Hills Intermediate is Hispanics who make up nearly 67.08% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.15%), Asians (9.36%), Whites or Caucasians (4.17%) and Two or More Races (1.13%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Park View Intermediate, Hispanics make up 85.39% of student population, followed by African Americans (10.02%), Whites or Caucasians (4.27%), Asians (0.16%) and Two or More Races (0.16%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Beverly Hills Intermediate’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 73.96% compared to 86.04% at Park View Intermediate.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Beverly Hills Intermediate has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.66% of its student population compared to 28.24% at Park View Intermediate.
Beverly Hills Intermediate’s bilingual students comprise 19.28%, gifted and talented students, 7.10%, while 13.53% are in the special education program. Park View Intermediate bilingual students comprise 24.30%, gifted and talented students, 4.93%, and 14.94% are in the special education program.
Beverly Hills Intermediate's 77 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.3 years. Teachers at Park View Intermediate, numbering 54 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.8 years.
Of its teaching staff, Beverly Hills Intermediate has three teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 24 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 17 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including five beginning teachers. In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Beverly Hills Intermediate there are 52 female teachers and 25 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by 11 teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has three staff members in the school administration department and six more working as school support staff.
At Park View Intermediate there are 32 female teachers and 22 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 14 special education teachers are being assisted by 15 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
