Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Benbrook Middle/High School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, with Morningside Middle School, which is a part of FORT WORTH ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Benbrook Middle/High School’s regular student population is 1,530 with a 15.8 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Morningside Middle School is 523 students and a 14.6 students/teacher ratio.
Benbrook Middle/High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 88 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Morningside Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 51 in student achievement, 72 in school progress, 70 in closing performance gaps and 71 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Benbrook Middle/High School's two out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics and Social Studies. Morningside Middle School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Benbrook Middle/High School. They make up for 49.67% of student population, followed by Hispanics (38.24%), African Americans (7.12%), Two or More Races (3.20%), Asians (1.31%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
At Morningside Middle School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 54.49% of student population, followed by African Americans (38.62%), Whites or Caucasians (3.44%), Asians (1.72%), Two or More Races (1.53%) and Native Americans (0.19%).
Based on household incomes, the Benbrook Middle/High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 51.70% compared to 98.28% at Morningside Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Benbrook Middle/High School has 169 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 11.05% of student population. Morningside Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 228 or about 43.59% of student population.
Benbrook Middle/High School’s bilingual students comprise 10.85%, gifted and talented students, 17.39%, while 10.26% are in the special education program. Morningside Middle School bilingual students comprise 40.73%, gifted and talented students, 12.05%, and 10.33% are in the special education program.
Benbrook Middle/High School's 96 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.2 years. Teachers at Morningside Middle School, numbering 35 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 7.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.6 years.
Of its teaching staff, Benbrook Middle/High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has ten teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 33 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 30 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Morningside Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has one teacher only serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 13 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
Benbrook Middle/High School has nine special education teachers assisted by 6 teacher aides or paraprofessionals. Morningside Middle School has two special education teachers and 4 teacher aides or paraprofessionals.
