As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. When we compared Bellaire High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with North Houston Early College High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Bellaire High School’s regular student population is 3,115 with a student-teacher ratio of 17.5 students/teacher ratio. The student population at North Houston Early College High School is 485 students and a student-teacher ratio of 21.2 students/teacher ratio.
Bellaire High School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 86 in student achievement, 85 in school progress and 79 in closing performance gaps. It scored 84 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, North Houston Early College High School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 97 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 98 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Bellaire High School's four out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. North Houston Early College High School’s three out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Social Studies and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Bellaire High School. They make up for 40.67% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (22.47%), African Americans (20.58%), Asians (13.32%), Two or More Races (2.38%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
At North Houston Early College High School, Hispanics make up 88.87% of student population, followed by African Americans (9.69%), Whites or Caucasians (0.82%), Native Americans (0.41%) and Asians (0.21%). There is no Two or More Races student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Bellaire High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 48.51% compared to 87.63% at North Houston Early College High School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bellaire High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 14.51% of its student population compared to 17.11% at North Houston Early College High School.
In addition, Bellaire High School has 13.71% bilingual students, 38.33% are in the gifted and talented program, while 6.87% are in the special education program. This stacks up against North Houston Early College High School with 17.94% bilingual students, 47.63% gifted and talented students and 0.82% students in the special education program.
Bellaire High School's 177 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 10.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 14.7 years. North Houston Early College High School's 22 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.7 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Bellaire High School has 15 teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has 34 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 55 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 25 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 40 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. North Houston Early College High School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, nine teachers have worked for 11-20 years, five teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while four teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. Bellaire High School employs 113 female teachers and 64 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, three special education teachers are being assisted by eight teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs nine staff members in the school administration department and 17 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, North Houston Early College High School employs 11 female teachers and 11 male teachers. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and five more working as school support staff.
