Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Beckham Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, with Butler Elementary School, which is a part of ARLINGTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Beckham Elementary School has a regular student population of 416 with a 14.3 students/teacher ratio while Butler Elementary School has 585 students and a student-teacher ratio of 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Beckham Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 77 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 82 in closing performance gaps. It scored 88 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Butler Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 93 in student achievement, 94 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 96 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Beckham Elementary School’s only distinction designation is in Science. Butler Elementary School's six out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Asians comprise the biggest group at Beckham Elementary School. They make up for 29.81% of student population, followed by African Americans (27.64%), Hispanics (25.24%), Whites or Caucasians (10.82%), Two or More Races (6.25%) and Native Americans (0.24%).
At Butler Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (24.96%), African Americans (9.23%), Two or More Races (6.15%), Asians (4.96%) and Native Americans (0.17%).
Based on household incomes, Beckham Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 70.19% compared to 30.43% at Butler Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Beckham Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 42.31% of its student population compared to 12.82% at Butler Elementary School.
In addition, Beckham Elementary School has 41.11% bilingual students, 10.58% are in the gifted and talented program, while 9.62% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Butler Elementary School with 12.82% bilingual students, 14.87% gifted and talented students and 12.48% students in the special education program.

In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Beckham Elementary School there are 27 female teachers and two male teachers.
