When we compared Bastian Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Pugh Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Bastian Elementary School has a regular student population of 664 with a 21.4 students/teacher ratio while Pugh Elementary School has 328 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Bastian Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Pugh Elementary School's three out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps. Bastian Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Bastian Elementary School is African Americans who make up nearly 68.52% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.22%), Two or More Races (1.20%), Whites or Caucasians (0.90%) and Native Americans (0.15%). There is no Asians student in the school.
At Pugh Elementary School, Hispanics make up 96.34% of student population, followed by African Americans (2.13%), Native Americans (0.61%), Two or More Races (0.61%) and Whites or Caucasians (0.30%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, Bastian Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 98.64% compared to 97.26% at Pugh Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Bastian Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.44% of its student population compared to 41.77% at Pugh Elementary School.
In addition, Bastian Elementary School has 22.89% bilingual students, 2.71% are in the gifted and talented program, while 7.23% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Pugh Elementary School with 64.02% bilingual students, 3.35% gifted and talented students and 11.28% students in the special education program.
