Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Banuelos Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Lamar Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Banuelos Elementary School has a regular student population of 933 with a 18.7 students/teacher ratio while Lamar Elementary School has 599 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13 students/teacher ratio.
Banuelos Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 72 in student achievement, 74 in school progress and 71 in closing performance gaps. It scored 73 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lamar Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 76 in student achievement, 91 in school progress, 87 in closing performance gaps and 90 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Lamar Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Banuelos Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Banuelos Elementary School. They make up for 59.16% of student population, followed by African Americans (20.79%), Whites or Caucasians (13.72%), Two or More Races (3.64%), Asians (2.14%) and Native Americans (0.32%).
At Lamar Elementary School, Hispanics make up 75.29% of student population, followed by African Americans (14.52%), Whites or Caucasians (7.51%), Two or More Races (2.50%) and Native Americans (0.17%). There is no Asians student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Banuelos Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 66.35% compared to 88.98% at Lamar Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Banuelos Elementary School has a slightly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 22.62% of its student population compared to 32.72% at Lamar Elementary School.
Banuelos Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 22.19%, gifted and talented students, 7.40%, while 10.93% are in the special education program. Lamar Elementary School bilingual students comprise 32.55%, gifted and talented students, 4.51%, and 12.19% are in the special education program.
49 teachers employed at Banuelos Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 6.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.4 years. The 46 teachers at Lamar Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 8.2 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.2 years.
Of its teaching staff, Banuelos Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, seven teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 15 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including nine beginning teachers. Lamar Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 22 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while nine teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Banuelos Elementary School there are 47 female teachers and two male teachers. Of its teaching staff, five special education teachers are being assisted by 17 teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
