Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Austin Elementary School, which is a part of ABILENE ISD, with Bassetti Elementary School, which is a part of ABILENE ISD, we noted a huge gap in ratings.
Austin Elementary School has a regular student population of 680 with a 14.8 students/teacher ratio while Bassetti Elementary School has 511 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.7 students/teacher ratio.
Austin Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 75 in student achievement, 75 in school progress and 66 in closing performance gaps. It scored 72 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Bassetti Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 70 in student achievement, 70 in school progress, 66 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Austin Elementary School and Bassetti Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Austin Elementary School. They make up for 55.88% of student population, followed by Hispanics (29.85%), African Americans (7.35%), Two or More Races (6.03%), Asians (0.44%) and Native Americans (0.29%).
The student population at Bassetti Elementary School is also predominantly by Whites or Caucasians at 38.16%, followed by Hispanics (34.05%), African Americans (15.85%), Two or More Races (8.02%), Asians (2.54%) and Native Americans (0.39%).
Based on household incomes, the Austin Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 46.47% compared to 67.12% at Bassetti Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Austin Elementary School has 15 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 2.21% of student population. Bassetti Elementary School has slightly more ELLs at 26 or about 5.09% of student population.
Austin Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 2.21%, gifted and talented students, 10.29%, while 15.44% are in the special education program. Bassetti Elementary School bilingual students comprise 5.09%, gifted and talented students, 5.28%, and 18.59% are in the special education program.
46 teachers employed at Austin Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 9.1 years with individual teaching experience averaging 11.6 years. The 34 teachers at Bassetti Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 10.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.1 years.
Of its teaching staff, Austin Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has seven teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 13 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 14 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while eight teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers. Bassetti Elementary School has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has six teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including one beginning teacher only.
