Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. When we compared Ashford Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Cunningham Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Ashford Elementary School has a regular student population of 564 with a 16 students/teacher ratio while Cunningham Elementary School has 610 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.4 students/teacher ratio.
Ashford Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Cunningham Elementary School's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Ashford Elementary School has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Ashford Elementary School. They make up for 51.95% of student population, followed by Hispanics (34.57%), Whites or Caucasians (7.80%), Asians (3.19%), Two or More Races (1.95%) and Native Americans (0.53%).
At Cunningham Elementary School, Hispanics make up 75.41% of student population, followed by African Americans (18.69%), Asians (2.79%), Whites or Caucasians (2.46%), Two or More Races (0.49%) and Native Americans (0.16%).
Based on household incomes, the Ashford Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is slightly lower at 87.41% compared to 95.90% at Cunningham Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Ashford Elementary School has 142 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 25.18% of student population. Cunningham Elementary School has significantly more ELLs at 422 or about 69.18% of student population.
In addition, Ashford Elementary School has 31.91% bilingual students, 3.90% are in the gifted and talented program, while 8.33% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Cunningham Elementary School with 69.18% bilingual students, 5.90% gifted and talented students and 10.16% students in the special education program.
