Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Arapaho Classical Magnet, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, with Spring Creek Elementary School, which is a part of RICHARDSON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Arapaho Classical Magnet has a regular student population of 554 with a 13.1 students/teacher ratio while Spring Creek Elementary School has 414 students and a student-teacher ratio of 13.3 students/teacher ratio.
Arapaho Classical Magnet performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 92 in student achievement, 86 in school progress and 92 in closing performance gaps. It scored 92 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Spring Creek Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B. The school posted 92 in student achievement, 85 in school progress, 79 in closing performance gaps and 88 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Arapaho Classical Magnet and Spring Creek Elementary School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Arapaho Classical Magnet. They make up for 57.76% of student population, followed by Hispanics (22.56%), African Americans (9.21%), Two or More Races (5.42%), Asians (4.69%) and Native Americans (0.36%).
At Spring Creek Elementary School, Whites or Caucasians are the biggest group, comprising 56.04% of student population, followed by Hispanics (24.88%), African Americans (10.63%), Asians (4.83%), Two or More Races (2.42%) and Native Americans (1.21%).
Based on household incomes, Arapaho Classical Magnet’s economically disadvantaged students is higher at 27.80% compared to 26.33% at Spring Creek Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Arapaho Classical Magnet has 44 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 7.94% of student population. Spring Creek Elementary School has more ELLs at 52 or about 12.56% of student population.
Arapaho Classical Magnet’s bilingual students comprise 7.04%, gifted and talented students, 9.57%, while 12.45% are in the special education program. Spring Creek Elementary School bilingual students comprise 12.56%, gifted and talented students, 7.49%, and 15.94% are in the special education program.
42 teachers employed at Arapaho Classical Magnet have been teaching in the school for an average of about 7.4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.7 years. The 31 teachers at Spring Creek Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 6.8 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10 years.
Of its teaching staff, Arapaho Classical Magnet no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has four teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 12 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while ten teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers. Spring Creek Elementary School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, seven teachers have worked for 11-20 years, eight teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including two beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Arapaho Classical Magnet there are 39 female teachers and three male teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by one teacher only aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has two staff members in the school administration department and seven more working as school support staff.
