Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. When we compared Alamo Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, with Carver Elementary School, which is a part of GOOSE CREEK CISD, we noted a wide disparity in ratings.
Alamo Elementary School has a regular student population of 796 with a 15.5 students/teacher ratio while Carver Elementary School has 653 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.3 students/teacher ratio.
Alamo Elementary School earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 79 in student achievement, 90 in school progress and 88 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Carver Elementary School not rated a State accountability rating of Not Rated: SB 1365. The school posted 62 in student achievement, 70 in school progress, 68 in closing performance gaps and 69 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Alamo Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Science, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Carver Elementary School did not earn any distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Alamo Elementary School. They make up for 59.55% of student population, followed by African Americans (19.85%), Whites or Caucasians (14.20%), Two or More Races (3.64%), Asians (2.14%) and Native Americans (0.63%).
At Carver Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 65.54% of student population, followed by African Americans (23.58%), Whites or Caucasians (7.66%), Two or More Races (1.99%), Native Americans (0.77%) and Asians (0.46%).
Based on household incomes, the Alamo Elementary School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 71.23% compared to 88.82% at Carver Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Alamo Elementary School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 30.65% of its student population compared to 25.11% at Carver Elementary School.
Alamo Elementary School’s bilingual students comprise 32.41%, gifted and talented students, 6.16%, while 10.93% are in the special education program. Carver Elementary School bilingual students comprise 32.01%, gifted and talented students, 2.91%, and 12.40% are in the special education program.
51 teachers employed at Alamo Elementary School have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.3 years with individual teaching experience averaging 10.5 years. The 45 teachers at Carver Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 7 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.4 years.
