Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Advanced Learning Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, with Agnes Cotton Academy, which is a part of SAN ANTONIO ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Advanced Learning Academy has a regular student population of 995 with a 15.8 students/teacher ratio while Agnes Cotton Academy has 441 students and a student-teacher ratio of 14.5 students/teacher ratio.
Advanced Learning Academy earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress and 81 in closing performance gaps. It scored 89 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.

Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Advanced Learning Academy's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and post-secondary. Agnes Cotton Academy’s four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary and 25% closing performance gaps.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, the dominant group in Advanced Learning Academy is Hispanics who make up nearly 78.19% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (15.88%), African Americans (3.62%), Two or More Races (1.61%) and Asians (0.60%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
At Agnes Cotton Academy, Hispanics make up 93.42% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (5.44%), African Americans (0.45%), Two or More Races (0.45%) and Asians (0.23%). There is no Native Americans student in the school.
Based on household incomes, the Advanced Learning Academy’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 50.05% compared to 90.93% at Agnes Cotton Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Advanced Learning Academy has 65 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 6.53% of student population. Agnes Cotton Academy has significantly more ELLs at 127 or about 28.80% of student population.
Advanced Learning Academy’s bilingual students comprise 6.13%, gifted and talented students, 28.64%, while 10.55% are in the special education program. Agnes Cotton Academy bilingual students comprise 31.52%, gifted and talented students, 5.90%, and 9.98% are in the special education program.
63 teachers employed at Advanced Learning Academy have been teaching in the school for an average of about 4.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.3 years. The 30 teachers at Agnes Cotton Academy have been serving the school for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Advanced Learning Academy has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has three teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 17 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 21 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 12 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including eight beginning teachers.
