Choosing the right middle school for your children can prove to be a daunting task. Middle school is when children start to flex their growing independence. This is a critical transition period for students. As they assert their independence, their responsibilities increase, they attend multiple classes and their academic performance are closely monitored and graded. Schools focus on preparing them for the more rigorous academic grind in high school.
When we compared Gorzycki Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, with Lively Middle School, which is a part of AUSTIN ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Gorzycki Middle School’s regular student population is 1,273 with a 16.1 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Lively Middle School is 1,093 students and a 15.8 students/teacher ratio.
Gorzycki Middle School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A (90-100) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 93 in student achievement, 91 in school progress and 98 in closing performance gaps. It scored 95 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Lively Middle School earned a State accountability rating of C. The school posted 75 in student achievement, 75 in school progress, 74 in closing performance gaps and 75 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Distinction Designations for Gorzycki Middle School and Lively Middle School are not applicable as neither one earned a recognition for outstanding achievement in seven categories.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Whites or Caucasians comprise the biggest group at Gorzycki Middle School. They make up for 64.34% of student population, followed by Hispanics (21.05%), Asians (8.01%), Two or More Races (4.63%), African Americans (1.34%) and Native Americans (0.55%).
At Lively Middle School, Hispanics make up 66.33% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (22.14%), African Americans (5.31%), Asians (3.11%), Two or More Races (3.02%) and Native Americans (0.09%).
Based on household incomes, the Gorzycki Middle School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 6.21% compared to 58.83% at Lively Middle School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Gorzycki Middle School has 51 English Language Learners or ELLS or about 4.01% of student population. Lively Middle School has significantly more ELLs at 366 or about 33.49% of student population.
In addition, Gorzycki Middle School has 4.16% bilingual students, 19.80% are in the gifted and talented program, while 12.65% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Lively Middle School with 36.60% bilingual students, 32.30% gifted and talented students and 13.54% students in the special education program.
Gorzycki Middle School's 79 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9.5 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.5 years. Teachers at Lively Middle School, numbering 69 teachers, have been serving the school for an average of 6.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 9.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Gorzycki Middle School no teacher serving the school for over 30 years, has 13 teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 32 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 15 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 14 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including four beginning teachers. Lively Middle School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has eight teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 14 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 13 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 29 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
In both schools, female teachers outnumber the male teachers. At Gorzycki Middle School there are 53 female teachers and 25 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, 16 special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals. In addition to its teaching staff, the school has four staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
At Lively Middle School there are 45 female teachers and 24 male teachers. Of its teaching staff, nine special education teachers are being assisted by nine teachers aides or paraprofessionals.
