Choosing the best possible elementary school is critical to a child’s foundational development. In Texas, public school districts adopt curriculum standards set by the State Board of Education. The current standards, called Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, outline what students should be able to learn and do in each course or grade. The curriculum is structured around the fundamentals of mathematics, science, social studies, language arts, music and reading.
When we compared Garden Oaks Montessori, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Memorial Elementary School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a slight difference in ratings.
Garden Oaks Montessori has a regular student population of 800 with a 18.5 students/teacher ratio while Memorial Elementary School has 368 students and a student-teacher ratio of 16.4 students/teacher ratio.
Garden Oaks Montessori earned a State accountability rating of B (80-89) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 78 in student achievement, 89 in school progress and 77 in closing performance gaps. It scored 85 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Memorial Elementary School performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 90 in student achievement, 92 in school progress, 100 in closing performance gaps and 94 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
Memorial Elementary School's four out of seven distinctions are in Mathematics, post-secondary, with 25% student progress and 25% closing performance gaps. Garden Oaks Montessori has no distinction.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, Hispanics comprise the biggest group at Garden Oaks Montessori. They make up for 52.88% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (31.88%), Two or More Races (5.25%), African Americans (5.00%), Asians (4.38%) and Native Americans (0.50%).
At Memorial Elementary School, Hispanics are the biggest group, comprising 60.60% of student population, followed by Whites or Caucasians (19.57%), African Americans (8.15%), Two or More Races (5.98%), Asians (5.16%) and Native Americans (0.54%).
Based on household incomes, the Garden Oaks Montessori’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly lower at 41.25% compared to 54.89% at Memorial Elementary School.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Garden Oaks Montessori has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 23.88% of its student population compared to 29.89% at Memorial Elementary School.
Garden Oaks Montessori’s bilingual students comprise 23.88%, gifted and talented students, 22.25%, while 14.38% are in the special education program. Memorial Elementary School bilingual students comprise 56.52%, gifted and talented students, 8.70%, and 11.96% are in the special education program.
43 teachers employed at Garden Oaks Montessori have been teaching in the school for an average of about 8.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging 12.4 years. The 22 teachers at Memorial Elementary School have been serving the school for an average of 4 years with individual teaching experience averaging 8.5 years.
Of its teaching staff, Garden Oaks Montessori has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 15 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, 11 teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while seven teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including three beginning teachers.
