As your children go through high school, choosing the right school is equally important as deciding on a perfect home. High school is when students are given the tools to figure out the paths they want to pursue as adults. There are more subjects and extra-curricular activities that students can choose from. Taking on their interests and passions help to shape the critical decisions they need to make as they plan their future.
When we compared Wheatley High School, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, with Eastwood Academy, which is a part of HOUSTON ISD, we noted a big difference in ratings.
Wheatley High School’s regular student population is 740 with a student-teacher ratio of 14.2 students/teacher ratio. The student population at Eastwood Academy is 397 students and a student-teacher ratio of 17.4 students/teacher ratio.
Wheatley High School earned a State accountability rating of C (70-79) based on three domains: student achievement, school progress and closing the gaps. Scores are scaled from 0 to 100 to align with letter grades. The school scored 68 in student achievement, 79 in school progress and 74 in closing performance gaps. It scored 78 overall in post-secondary readiness, a broad term that refers to student preparedness to undertake multiple pathways after graduation, or specifically, their preparedness for college education.
On the other hand, Eastwood Academy performed excellent to earn a State accountability rating of A. The school posted 98 in student achievement, 96 in school progress, 88 in closing performance gaps and 95 overall in post-secondary readiness.
A distinction designation acknowledges districts and campuses for outstanding achievement based on the outcomes of several performance indicators. Distinction designations are awarded for achievement in several areas and are based on performance relative to a group of campuses of similar type, size, grade span, and student demographics.
It is in this area where the two schools differ. Wheatley High School’s only distinction designation is in Comparative Closing the Gaps. Eastwood Academy's five out of seven distinctions are in Reading/English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Social Studies, post-secondary and with 25% student progress.
Based on Racial/Ethnic Groups, African Americans comprise the biggest group at Wheatley High School. They make up for 54.19% of student population, followed by Hispanics (44.73%), Whites or Caucasians (0.41%), Native Americans (0.41%), Asians (0.14%) and Two or More Races (0.14%).
At Eastwood Academy, Hispanics make up 94.21% of student population, followed by Asians (2.52%), Whites or Caucasians (1.76%), African Americans (0.76%), Two or More Races (0.50%) and Native Americans (0.25%).
Based on household incomes, Wheatley High School’s economically disadvantaged students is significantly higher at 95.41% compared to 70.78% at Eastwood Academy.
In terms of Limited English Proficiency (LEP), a term used in the United States that refers to a person who is not fluent in the English Language, mainly because it is not their native language, Wheatley High School has a significantly higher number of English Language Learners comprising 19.46% of its student population compared to 8.06% at Eastwood Academy.
In addition, Wheatley High School has 15.81% bilingual students, 6.76% are in the gifted and talented program, while 18.65% are in the special education program. This stacks up against Eastwood Academy with 7.30% bilingual students, 49.87% gifted and talented students and 1.26% students in the special education program.
Wheatley High School's 52 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 7.9 years with individual teaching experience averaging nearly 11.3 years. Eastwood Academy's 22 teachers have been working at the campus for an average of 9 years with individual teaching experience averaging close to 12.7 years.
Of its teaching staff, Wheatley High School has two teachers serving the school for over 30 years, has five teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, 12 teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while 20 teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, including six beginning teachers. Eastwood Academy has one teacher only serving the school for over 30 years, has two teachers serving the school for 20-30 years, eight teachers have worked for 11-20 years, six teachers have worked for 6-10 years, while six teachers have been serving the school for over 1-5 years, and school has no beginning teacher.
In both schools, male teachers outnumber the female teachers. Wheatley High School employs 22 male teachers and 29 female teachers. Of its teaching staff, four special education teachers are being assisted by four teachers aides or paraprofessionals. The school also employs four staff members in the school administration department and 19 more working as school support staff.
On the other hand, Eastwood Academy employs nine male teachers and 12 female teachers. The school also employs one staff members in the school administration department and four more working as school support staff.
